چکیده

In recent years, pioneering work carried out by Sauvage, Stoddart and co-workers [1], , has focused on the development of synthetic methodologies and the characterization of catenanes and rotaxanes. Catenanes and rotaxanes are examples of interlocked molecule. Unlike classical molecular structures, they consist of two or more separate components which are mechanically connected. Catenanes consist of two or more interlocked macrocyclic rings, while rotaxanes are constituted by a macrocyclic ring trapped on a linear unit, i.e., the thread, by two bulky stoppers The submolecular units may undergo relative motions such as “circumrotation” (rotation of one ring inside the cavity of the other) and “shuttling” (linear motion along the thread), which may be addressed by external stimuli, such as photons, electrons and solvent variations. This property makes rotaxanes and catenanes prime candidates for the construction of artificial molecular-level machines and possibly for the fabrication of molecular electronic devices , attracting considerable attention from chemists, physicists, and materials scientists. Controlling the location of a macrocycle between two or more (non-) equivalent sites in a catenane or a rotaxane has already been achieved . Unfortunately, little is yet known about the mechanisms by which mechanically interlocked components move with respect to each other.

Semi - Empirical Study of a pH - Switchable [ 2 ] Rotaxane

Semi-empirical (AM1) electronic structure calculations are reported on a pH-switchable [2] rotaxane whose synthesis was reported in [Angew. Chem. Int. Ed., 36 (1997) 1904]. The [2] rotaxane possesses two cationic binding sites, with different affinities toward dibenzo [24] crown-8 (the ring component of the [2] rotaxane) depending upon the pH of the system. The computational results capture thi...

Selecting reactions and reactants using a switchable rotaxane organocatalyst with two different active sites.

The activation mode of a rotaxane-based organocatalyst with both secondary amine and squaramide catalytic units can be switched with acid or base. The macrocycle blocks whichever of the catalytic sites it is positioned over. The switchable rotaxane catalyst generates different products from a mixture of three building blocks according to the location of the macrocyclic ring in the rotaxane.

A redox-switchable [2]rotaxane in a liquid-crystalline state.

Redox-driven mechanical movement, which has been achieved for a liquid-crystalline (LC) bistable [2]rotaxane in the LC phase, is accompanied by obvious electrochromism (electrochemically induced changes in color) of the material. The dumbbell-shaped LC [2]rotaxane with redox-active moieties, which interlocks with an ionic macrocycle, forms ordered redox-active condensed states.

NIR-triggered drug release from switchable rotaxane-functionalized silica-covered Au nanorods.

An NIR-triggered drug delivery system was developed by capping photo-switchable azobenzene-based rotaxane onto Au nanorod-mesoporous silica core-shell hybrids. Drug release from the nanocarrier in zebrafish embryo models could be controlled remotely under NIR irradiation, showing significant drug spreading to the adjacent tissues.

Type III-B rotaxane dendrimers.

Type III-B first generation [3]rotaxane and second generation [4]rotaxane dendrimers have been synthesized via (1) a modified copper-catalyzed alkyne-azide cycloaddition (CuAAC), (2) Glaser-Hay's acetylenic oxidative homo-coupling, and (3) amide formation. The dendron does not reveal obvious cytotoxicities in L929 fibroblast cells. The rotaxane dendrimers can capture ammonia and are switchable ...

Selecting reactions and reactants using a switchable rotaxane organocatalyst with two different active sites† †Electronic supplementary information (ESI) available: Synthetic procedures and characterisation data. See DOI: 10.1039/c4sc03279a Click here for additional data file.

Synthetic catalysts have previously been developed where a stimulus can be used to turn the catalytic activity ‘on’ or ‘off’ or to change the stereochemical outcome of a reaction. Here we report on an articial system that can switch between two different modes of organocatalysis, each promoting a different chemical transformation. The result is a molecular catalyst that can be used to produce ...
